Senior Living Options
Compare Senior Living Options
Today’s seniors are fortunate to have many senior housing options available to them, depending upon their situation and specific needs. Here are brief descriptions of the most common senior housing options.
Assisted Living – For seniors who need assistance with one or more activities of daily living (ADL), but still want to maintain some independence. Most residents are alert and enjoy social activities and recreation, but cannot live safely on their own. Generally refers to mid-size to larger communities.
Board & Care Homes – These smaller Assisted Living communities are designed for those who prefer a cozy, home-like environment offering full personal care and limited activities. Residents typically require more care and benefit from a higher caregiver-to-resident ratio.
Nursing Homes – Residents require 24-hour skilled nursing care and full assistance with most activities of daily living (ADL). Many cannot move well on their own, are bedridden or are in need of intensive therapy.
Alzheimer’s / Dementia Care – Communities offer this care to seniors who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or Dementia and exhibit signs of forgetfulness, confusion, agitation and often, wandering behavior. These facilities usually offer a secure environment.
Independent/Retirement Community – This popular senior housing option is for high-functioning seniors who can take care of themselves. They live independently and can dress, cook, clean and take medication.
Continuing Care Community (CCC) – These communities offer all levels of senior living and care within one community. Residents can “age in place” without having to move if their care needs change.
Home Care/Home Health – Home care aids or nurses make regular home visits to assist semi-independent seniors with tasks such as bathing, cooking, cleaning or medical needs.
Adult Day Care – Seniors attend a community where activities, meals, social/recreational outings, and general supervision are provided during the day and then return home.
